(Danville, VA) – Danville City Council is looking at increasing the meals tax as a way to raise retirement benefits for public safety employees, but many of council’s members oppose the idea.  During last week’s budget work session, council explored the idea of raising the city’s meals tax from 6 to 7 percent.  Several members said they would support the raise only as a last resort. The meals tax increase could bring in about 1-point-2 million dollars in additional revenue, but would still leave a gap of about $3 million in the upcoming 2018-2019 budget.   The city increased the real estate tax rate last year from 73 cents per $100 of assessed value to 80 cents.
