(Danville, Va.) — The Danville Fire Marshal’s office has determined the cause of the fire at 185 Sunset Drive. The fire was determined to be accidental, caused by improperly discarded smoking material. The identification of the victim awaits confirmation from the state medical examiner’s office.

Firefighters answered the call at 4:40 a.m. Saturday. The first units on scene reported that flames were visible for several blocks.

The single-story house was fully involved and crews had to work quickly to keep the flames from spreading to adjoining homes.

Due to the intensity of the fire, crews were unable to search inside until the flames were out. Crews found a man dead inside the home.
