(Danville, Va.) –The Danville Fire Department responded to a pair of house fires Friday night.

The first call came just after 10 p.m. from 234 Sylvan Road.

The house well fully involved, but the occupant had gotten out safely and was in the back yard.

They fought the flames from the exterior of the home and had the fire under control in less than 30 minutes.

The occupant said he woke up to find the power cord to his portable heater shorted out and on fire.

18 firefighters were on scene for about two and a half hours.

The second call came from north Danville, where a home at 531 First Street caught fire just before midnight.

Smoke and fire was coming from the basement of the two-story house. The basement suffered heavy damage and the home is currently unlivable. Smoke, heat and water damage was reported throughout the house.

The Fire Marshall determined the blaze was caused by an open flame.
