(Danville, Va.) — Republicans and Democrats in Virginia’s House of Delegates are offering separate commissions to deal with the problem of gun violence on school campuses. Democrats announced Tuesday that they’re forming a “Safe Virginia” task force that will also consider gun issues.

Republicans have formed the Select Committee on School Safety. Danville Del. Danny Marshall co-chairs the 22-member bipartisan panel. He says it is the first statewide approach to the problem in 150 years. Marshall says Southside school districts are anxious to add resource officers and improve school safety but lack the money to make the upgrades. He points out that George Washington High School in Danville has dozens of doors to secure on the main campus alone.

Marshall is pushing for a dedicated funding source that would be earmarked specifically for school safety. He meets with the Danville School Board this week and says the full committee will convene later this month.

Meanwhile, Democrats in the House of Delegates are launching their own group to investigate school safety and gun violence in the state. The “Safe Virginia Initiative” task force is a group chaired by two Northern Virginia legislators that will focus on gun control and school safety.

Democratic leaders said they’ve extended invitations to House Speaker Kirk Cox and other Republican legislators to be part of their task force.
