(Danville, Va.) – A low pressure system is dumping lots of snow over the Danville area and the National Weather Service says this slow front could leave six inches in the region.

Blacksburg meteorologist Dennis Sleighter says the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 5:00 this afternoon. The heavy snow should continue to fall throughout the day, followed by flurries this evening. The storm is expected to move out of Southside Virginia between six and eight p.m. But with the temperature dropping to the mid-teens tonight, a hard freeze will follow.

Danville Public Works Director Rick Drazenovich says the roads are already slick and even experienced drivers and “tractor trailers are having trouble navigating up the hills.” He says if you don’t have to drive, stay off the road.

Snowplows began hitting the major thoroughfares at 8:30 a.m. and crews will work through the night. Once the snow stops and the main streets are cleared, plows will move into connector streets and bus routes before clearing residential streets.
