(Reidsville, N.C.) — Community members gathered this weekend to help a Ruffin, N.C. family who lost everything in a pre-Christmas fire.

30-year-old Shane Lucas and his 22-month-old son, Stephen, are being treated for burns at a Chapel Hill Hospital.

On Saturday, a group of people from Reidsville chipped in to furnish a home for Shane and Abby Lucas and their young son, who remains on a ventilator and is heavily sedated. A Reidsville car dealership has also loaned the family a car that  Abby will be able to use while visiting her husband and child at the burn center at UNC Hospital.

The fire destroyed the couple’s home on Quick Road in Ruffin, right at the Caswell County line.

The father was in the bathroom with his son and heard a popping sound. He opened the door and was overcome by thick, black smoke. Shane grabbed his son and they fled for their lives through the smoke and flames. He was able to drive the boy to the Ruffin Volunteer Fire Department, where both were treated before being airlifted to Chapel Hill.

The father is doing well but the toddler was listed this weekend in critical, but stable condition and will have to undergo surgery. He is being treated for second-degree burns.

Only the foundation of the home was left standing and investigators have been unable to determine a cause.
