(Bent Mountain, Va.) — Landowners, businesses and grassroots organizations have filed a federal lawsuit to block the recently approved water quality permit for the Mountain Valley Pipeline. In the suit, the plantiffs contend the State Water Control Board failed to properly analyze negative impacts to water quality and granted certification based on information that was not before the board. Mara Robbins, with the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, said the Board must show ‘reasonable assurance’ that water quality standards will be met. She added that landowners are reasonably sure that the pipeline will devastate local streams and called the board’s decision “unjustified.” The permit was granted by Virginia’s State Water Control Board on December 8.
