(Charlottesville, Va.) – At the conclusion of a five hour meeting, the Charlottesville City Council voted unanimously to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson.

Tuesday’s vote comes months after councilors voted to remove the Robert E. Lee statue from a different park, sparking an Aug. 12th protest by white nationalists that ended in violence.

Although the council had initially planned to leave a statue of Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson in place, it reconsidered in light of what happened at the rally.

The statues will be taken down, pending the outcome of a lawsuit challenging the removal of the Robert E. Lee monument.

The city plans to redesign both parks in two phases and the city manager will name a community council to determine what the parks will look like. A consulting firm has been hired to redesign both Emancipation and Justice Park, once the statues have been removed.
