Last night Danville City Council approved constructing a new substation at a former factory. The vote means the city will appropriate $8 million from the unassigned electric fund balance to fund the construction of a substation at the former Morgan Olson Building.

In April 2026, city council approved an electric services agreement for a large electric customer at the former Morgan Olson facility. Construction of this substation will support the associated load growth and increased electric demand. The resulting increase in electric sales and revenue will help mitigate inflationary cost pressures that would otherwise be passed on to customers through future rate adjustments.

 City council also approved transferring ownership of the former Galileo Magnet School site to the Danville Industrial Development Authority.

The site is 3.87 acres and was originally the home of Sears. The building was originally constructed in 1956 and is nearly 73,000 square feet.

As part of the City’s ongoing economic development strategy, the proposed transfer of this property to the Industrial Development Authority (IDA) will position the site for redevelopment. Conveyance to the IDA will enable targeted marketing of the property to private developers seeking investment opportunities within the downtown district, supporting continued revitalization and economic growth in the area.
