Danville City Council tabled an ordinance last night dealing with the homeless and unpermitted camping on city property. The council tabled the ordinance quickly and said they plan to seek more information on helping the homeless population in Danville.

Multiple people spoke before council after the ordinance was tabled, including Patrina Carter, the President and CEO for Tri-County Community Action Agency, who discussed how South Boston is planning to help with homelessness.

“The town of South Boston went in and they’re doing all of the infrastructure and then we’re going to come in and put up houses,” said Carter. “We’re going to follow what’s been nationally successful in working with homeless families, get them housed and then we can deal with jobs, because when you go for a job interview, they have no way of calling you and you have no sustainability on that job.”

House of Hope Executive Director Jude Swanson also addressed the council and said that while the shelter is expanding, more needs to be done.

“With the expansion we’re going to be able to house over 40 people, which is fantastic, I mean that’s almost triple and sounds like a huge jump, but if this trend continues I can tell you that it’s not going to be enough,” said Swanson.

Swanson also noted that the shelter has seen an uptick in homelessness over the last five to six months in Danville. The council made it clear that the ordinance was not aimed at putting homeless people in jail.
