Students across the state of Virginia are planning to walk out of classrooms in protest of Governor Glen Youngkin’s transgender policy changes, according to NBC Washington. The public comment period opened Monday on the proposed changes, which would restrict students facilities and activities that are affiliated with their biological sex.

The changes would also require students to go by the name and pronouns that are in school records, unless a parent approves something else. According to NBC Washington, more than 90 schools and thousands of students will be participating in the protest.

Governor Youngkin on Monday told 7News reporter Nick Minock that he disagreed with the idea that the new policies suggest that transgender students don’t matter.

“I just disagree with that thought,” said Youngkin. “And in fact, the reality is that you either think that parents should be engaged in this decision, which is what I firmly believe, it’s what Virginia voters expressed loudly last year or you think that parents should be excluded from this decision. And I don’t understand that view that parents should be excluded. This is about families and therefore, I would ask everyone to please read the draft guidelines. I do recognize that a lot of people have strong views, but I do believe they’re probably based on not having read the documents and the documents [are] very clear that we want to protect students. The word bullying, I think is used 36 times in the document. We have really, really enhanced all safety aspects to make sure that harassment and discrimination [are] fully admonished and to make sure that students don’t have to have any kind of harassment. But I think the most important topic here is that this is about bringing the parents into a decision moment where they belong. And I just argue that it’s hard to believe that previous model policy excluded parents, I mean, here we are today in a world where most important decisions are being made and there was a policy that excluded parents and that’s just not right. Patents should be absolutely at the center of this discussion with their children, who they have known since before they were born. And I think this is for the child’s best interest for the family’s best interest. And I think folks once they read the policy, will better understand that.”
