RICHMOND, Va. – Crews are set to remove the country’s largest remaining monument to the Confederacy Wednesday, a towering statute of Robert E. Lee from Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia.

As the statue comes down, Gov. Ralph Northam is also removing and replacing the time capsule believed to be buried beneath the memorial.

Northam said the “monument and the time capsule reflected the Virginia of 1890 — and it’s time to remove both.”

The new capsule, which was created by Richmond Sculptor Paul DiPasquale, will be placed in the statue’s base. Articles contained in the new time capsule were gathered following recommendations from the public and a group of historians.

Current plans call for the base to remain on Monument Ave. Should the base be moved, the time capsule will be buried nearby.
