RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina House Republicans advanced legislation on Tuesday that would distribute more money from the federal government’s most recent coronavirus relief package to state agencies and programs.

The measure, which authorizes formally how more than $1.7 billion in relief funds are doled out, was approved by two committees by early Tuesday evening. The full House had planned floor debate and votes for Tuesday, but they were delayed until Wednesday as committees worked through proposed amendments. The Senate was expected to consider the legislation later this week.

Gov. Roy Cooper already signed legislation last month that doled out $2.2 billion in similar funds for public education, vaccine distribution and rental assistance. The latest measure includes funds for colleges and universities, fisheries, COVID testing and tracing and food relief. The relief legislation approved by Congress didn’t give much leeway to state lawmakers about the spending categories.

The legislation also extends deadlines and waivers for several government activities initiated last year due to the pandemic.
