DANVILLE, Va. – The National Weather Service is now projecting the Dan River will reach major flood stage (32 feet) overnight and crest at 32.4 feet early Friday afternoon. If the projections hold, the crest would be the highest on record since the river gaging station was moved to its current location in 1996.
The river level is approaching a moderate flood stage, which is 26 feet. At 3:45 p.m., the Dan River level was at 23.66 feet.
Trade Street is closed from Advance Street to the Danville Stadium Cinemas due to flooding.
Motorists should allow more time for their commute to work on Friday morning because, at major flood stage, additional streets or sections could be affected by floodwater than the city typically experiences.
Public Works Department crews will monitor conditions around the clock and close street sections as needed.
