LOUISA, Va. (AP) — A 17-year-old convicted of slaying an 82-year-old Virginia man and wounding his 73-year-old wife during a robbery has been sentenced to 128 years in prison.

The Louisa County Commonwealth’s attorney’s office did not name the convicted murderer Tuesday as prosecutors announced his sentencing on charges of first-degree murder, malicious wounding and robbery, among other counts. Officials cited a policy prohibiting the release of juvenile offenders’ names.

The defendant was 16 in November 2019 when he entered the Gordonsville-area home of Roger and Nancy Payne, after having previously shown up to “scout” the location, authorities alleged. He returned two days later and told the couple he had been watching them and knew they had money, prosecutors said.

He demanded money, led them to train tracks behind their home and shot them with a sawed-off shotgun, according to prosecutors.

Nancy Payne pretended to be dead and survived her wounds, officials said. Authorities eventually caught the suspect driving the couple’s car in a different Virginia county, and found the shotgun in the trunk, according to investigators.

Louisa County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rusty McGuire said in a statement Tuesday that prosecutors were pleased with the case’s outcome.

“We … hope that the sentence handed down will help the Payne family find a small amount of solace and closure,” the statement said. “Unfortunately, nothing can fully remove the pain inflicted on the family by the defendant and his cowardly acts.”
