RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam joined 10 of his Democratic counterparts from across the nation Wednesday in vowing that all votes will be counted in the upcoming presidential election.

Twelve Democratic governors have issued a joint statement defending American democracy, vowing that every ballot will be counted in the election after President Donald Trump expressed skepticism during the first presidential debate. Trump said  Tuesday night that mail voting is ripe for fraud, and he refused to say whether he would accept the results.

In their joint statement, the governors — all Democrats –said that efforts to toss ballots or refuse a peaceful transfer of power “are nothing less than an assault on democracy.”

Signing the statement were the governors of Virginia, Michigan, California, Illinois, New Jersey, Washington, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Oregon, Nevada, New Mexico and Delaware.

The 12 governors said if President Trump loses on Nov. 3, “he must leave office – period.”

They wrote that elections are not “an exercise in controlling power” and that disenfranchising voters “strikes at the very heart” of democracy.
