ROANOKE, Va. – Roanoke’s monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee will be relocated. The statue, which was been in storage since it was toppled two months ago, will be moved to a cemetery.

On Monday, the Roanoke City Council voted to accept a proposal from the Evergreen Burial Park to place the obelisk in the Roanoke cemetery.

In August, the Roanoke City Council voted unanimously to remove the statue after the obelisk was knocked from its base by a city resident. In July, the Robert. E Lee memorial was toppled by 70-year-old William Foreman, who was charged in the incident. He said at the time that he feared the site would be the scene of violent protests if the statue remained at its present location.

The plan to relocate the monument was signed by the presidents of Evergreen Development Co., Inc., and the Historical Society of Western Virginia.
