DANVILLE, Va. – The body of a drowning victim has been recovered from the Dan River following a boating accident.

The Danville Fire Department, Danville Life Saving Crew, and Danville Police Department were dispatched to call after a canoe overturned near the Danville YMCA just after 1 p.m. Sunday. While responding, crews learned that two people were in the water in distress.

The Danville Fire Department responded and initiated rescue efforts at several locations along the river.

One person was able to swim to shore below the Martin Luther King bridge and was treated by the Danville Life Saving Crew and transported to the local hospital. The second person drowned.

The body was recovered in the vicinity of the water treatment plant about an hour later. Their names have not been released.

Police believe the canoe went over the dam. The river was high and the canoe overturned. Neither was wearing a life jacket.

The Danville Police Department and Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries are investigating the accident.
