RICHMOND, Va. – Gov. Ralph Northam is promising swift and sweeping legislation on issues ranging from gun control to abortion rights, a day after Democrats regained control of the House and Senate for the first time in a generation.

He said the plans to introduce what he described as “commonsense” gun legislation in January and said he “is convinced they will become law in Virginia.” These include getting rid of bump stocks and high capacity background checks, along with red flag laws, one-gun-a-month legislation, and universal background checks. Republicans thwarted similar legislation in July when Northam called a special legislative session in the wake of the Virginia Beach shooting that left a dozen people dead.

Northam said he also believes Virginians were sending a message Tuesday about their dissatisfaction with President Trump and his policies, saying “this president has been an embarrassment to this country.” Northam added that it “has been one thing after another and I think it’s catching up with him.”

Northam said he also plans to offer legislation expanding abortion rights and stopping discrimination of the LGBT community.
