(Danville, Va.) — A veteran Danville Police officer has been named as the new major in the department.

Captain Timothy W. Jones was selected during a promotion process that took place during the month of August. Eight applicants — three Danville Police Captains and five Lieutenants — applied for the position. Jones’ promotion fills the opening created with the retirement of Major Eddie Burke at the end of August.

Jones was hired by the Danville Police Department on September 1, 1993. He has 25 years of continuous service with the department. Jones is a 6 year veteran of the United States Army and has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology from Averett University.

During his tenure, he has served as a community police officer, patrol officer, school resource officer, field-training officer, detective, Lieutenant and Captain within the Patrol and Community Police Divisions.
