(Richmond, Va.) – Virginia State Police say traffic deaths over the long Memorial Day weekend dropped to their lowest level in more than five years.

Preliminary reports from this past weekend indicate there were six traffic deaths during the 2018 holiday weekend.

One of the deaths came in a single-vehicle accident in Pittsylvania County, while others were recorded in Grayson, Nelson and Rockbridge Counties.

State Police say drivers in four of the fatal crashes were not wearing seat belts, while three were ejected from their vehicles.

Eight traffic deaths were recorded during Memorial Day 2017.
