(Henry County, Va.) — Kayla Dalton has been sentenced in a high profile animal cruelty case in Henry County.

The 26-year-old was charged after the woman claimed she found two badly emaciated puppies at a Henry County landfill last July. Animal control officials say the dogs were Dalton’s and had been starved and were unable to walk or eat. They have since recovered. One official described it as the worst animal cruelty case she’s ever seen.

The court ordered Dalton to pay restitution of more than $2,500 to the SPCA. She was also given a 30-day jail sentence, which was suspended on condition that Dalton is on good behavior for one year.

The dogs have since been adopted, but the court allowed Dalton to keep her three cats.
