(South Boston, Va.) — A South Boston man confined to a wheelchair crawled out of his burning home to safety over the weekend.

The fire was at a single-story home at 316 Webster Street in South Boston and was called in at around 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

Family members said the occupant, Donnie Fears, crawled from the burning home and was not injured.

Both the South Boston and Halifax Fire Departments responded, along with about two dozen firefighters. They were on the scene for about an hour.

The fire started in the living room and the home suffered extensive damage.

The American Red Cross is assisting Fears.
