(Danville, Va.) – A candlelight vigil was held in Doyle Thomas Park Sunday night for Nitaya Adams, the 16-year-old who was gunned down in the 700 block of Paxton Street early Sunday morning.

Police responded to a report of shots fired just before 3 a.m. They learned minutes later that the teen had been taken by private vehicle to the emergency room, where she was pronounced dead by hospital personnel. The rising senior at George Washington High School died of gunshot wounds in a hail of gunfire that struck several cars and a home. Stray bullets hit a house, along with an SUV and a GMC Denali, shattering a window.

The body has been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for an autopsy.

The victim’s mother attended a Sunday evening vigil for Nitaya, along with friends and neighbors.

Police spent the day collecting evidence and talking to neighbors. At last report, no charges had been filed in the homicide. The teen’s death is the ninth murder in Danville this year.

The murder scene is located just a few blocks from the home on Cabell Street where a man was shot and killed last week after arguing with his neighbor and not far from the home on Shelton Street where a man was shot and killed during a home invasion in May.
