Martinsville Speedway Celebration 2013 July 3rd

Fuel For Families Food Drive Will Be Part Of Celebration 2013 At Martinsville Speedway

Over 3,500 children in the Martinsville and Henry County area live with hunger, but anyone attending Celebration 2013 at Martinsville Speedway on July 3 can help lower that astounding number.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Fuel For Families Food Drive will be held in conjunction with Celebration. Everyone attending the event is urged to bring non-perishable food and personal care items and drop them off at one of several collection areas at entrance gates and in the carnival ride area.

Celebration 2013 is a free-to-the-public event featuring live music, children's rides and fireworks. This year's featured entertainment is Night Ranger, one of the most popular bands of the 1980s that is still rocking strong.

According to statistics provided by the United Way of Henry County and Martinsville, 26.4 percent of the population of Martinsville is food insecure and 18.3 percent of those living in Henry County are food insecure. Those numbers include approximately 3,600 children. Food insecure is defined as a lack of access, at times, to enough food for a healthy, active life for all household members.

"No one should have to go hungry, especially children," said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. "This is a chance for all of us to chip in and help area food banks make sure everyone has a good summer without the worry of where the next meal is coming from."

"The United Way of Henry County and Martinsville is excited to once again partner with Celebration to host the Fifth Annual Fuel for Families Food Drive.  As many families in our community continue to struggle with the most basic of needs - food, we want to help do our part to restock the shelves at our local food banks," said Tiffani Underwood, executive director of the United Way of Henry County and Martinsville.  "We encourage everyone who is coming to Celebration 2013 to bring a non-perishable food item to help ensure that no one in our community goes hungry."

Items most needed are non-perishable foods, beef stew, soups, peanut butter and canned vegetables, and personal care items such as deodorant and toothpaste.
Items may be dropped off at Martinsville Speedway office in advance of July 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
On the day of Celebration 2013, items may be dropped off at any entry gates and in the carnival ride area.
Cash donations will also be accepted.

"The United Way will be collecting non-perishable food items as well as donations to support our area food banks," said Underwood.  "Many of our food banks partner with larger organizations like Feeding America and are able to leverage your donations to purchase more food.  For every dollar you donate, they can provide up to 8 meals to feed hungry people in our community."

The children's rides at Celebration 2013 will open at 5 p.m. and remain open until 11:30 p.m. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. with opening act Project 4 followed by Night Ranger. The fireworks will follow Night Ranger's performance. The entire event, including the rides, will be free of charge.
