Empty Bowls Event

You're invited to join in the Empty Bowls event Friday, February 27th at God's Storehouse from 11am -2pm or 4:30pm - 7pm.  Dinner will include soup, crackers and water.  Entertainment will be provided throughout the day.  Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger.  The basic premise is simple: potters and artists work together to create handcrafted bowls for the event.  The guests are then served a simple meal in these bowls.  They are told to keep these bowls as a reminder of the empty bowls in the world.  For more information about this event, call 434.793.3663.

Pinto Bean Supper

Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church Women's Ministries will be hosting a pinto bean supper, Friday, February 27th from 5pm - 7pm.  Meal will include beans, slaw, fried potatoes, cornbread, drinks and desserts.  Minimum donation of $6.  Church is located at 16400 Mt. Cross Road in Dry Fork, Va.  All proceeds will go towards the church's building fund.

Brunswick Stew

First Baptist Church of Gretna is hosting a Brunswick Stew sale in their parking lot Saturday, February 28th.  Stew will sell for $5 per quart and can be picked up anytime between 11am - 12:30pm.

Hot Dog Dinner

 Community Baptist Church (611 Iris Lane) is hosting a hot dog dinner Saturday, February 28th at 5:30pm.  Enjoy some great food at no cost...just a love offering will be accept.  There will also be music and entertainment provided by the youth department.  All proceeds will go towards their spring trip to Carowinds.  Come out for hotdogs,delicious sides and desserts.No set cost-by love offering only. and then stay to hear music and see a skit put on by our youth dept. all proceeds to help the youth with their spring trip to Carowinds.

Women's Day

The Missionaries of the Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Providence, North Carolina will be celebrating WOMEN'S DAY on Sunday, March 1st at 3pm.  The Guest Speaker is Minister Danielle Stone, Associate Minister at Mill Hill Baptist Church, Roxboro, North Carolina. 
All women are asked to wear white.

Halifax Co Heritage and Antique Machinery Festival

The 12th Annual Halifax Co Heritage and Antique Machinery Festival at Halifax County Fairgrounds will be May 1st - 3rd.  Admission is $5 per day for adults and children 12 years and older.  Children under 12 are admitted free of charge.  For more information, visit www.halifaxcountyheritagefestival.org.

Read Across America

South Boston Public Library (509 Broad Street South Boston, VA 24592) is hosting Read Across America Saturday, March 7th from 10am - 1pm.  10am: Children’s Author, Carol Cole author of “The Penguin Lady”; 11am - Ms. Sue and Pipsqueak Sing along and story time; 11:30am Dr. Seuss Arts and Crafts; 12pm Young Adult Author Kristen-Paige Madonia author of “Fingerprints of You” and “Invisible Fault Lines.”  You're invited to listen to Virginia authors read their favorite Dr. Seuss story and an excerpt from their own books. Book signings will follow each reading. Fountain Bookstore from Richmond, VA will be selling the author’s books at the event. Take a picture with Thing 1 and Thing 2! A prize will be given to one lucky student at the 10am and 12pm readings! Fundraiser for Kya

You can help support a three year old overcoming kidney cancer at O'Kelly's (Piney Forest location), March 7th from 12pm - 4pm.  There will be venders set up with various products with all proceeds going to Kya and her family.  There will also be a raffle for a basket filled with $500 worth of products.  For more information, contact Charity Talbott at 434.710.7713.

Running 4 A Reason

The 2nd Annual Running 4 a Reason 5K/10K and Kids Fun Run will be hosted by Westover Christian Academy Class of 2017.  This year, 30% of all proceeds will benefit the Danville Chapter of the March of Dimes.  Registration is open at www.wcarunning4areason.com through eventbrite.  Cost is $10 for children 2 - 12 and $30 for ages 13 and up. 

What Does Research Really Mean: How Could It Affect You

Breakthroughs in cancer prevention, treatment and many other issues, medical and nonmedical, occur daily because of research.  Join us on March 10th, from 11:30am - 1pm at Ballou Recreation Center for What Does Research Really Mean:  How could it affect you.  This program is part of the popular free Keeping Well in Mind, Body & Spirit Series for those concerned with cancer prevention and survivorship, open to the entire community. It will be presented by two dynamic speakers. VCU and Massey Cancer Center researcher Andrew Barnes, PhD, will present findings from a study conducted in local communities on how people can make smart choices when picking a health insurance plan under the Affordable Care Act.  Amma Agyemang, Clinical Psychology Doctoral Student, VCU, will present her current research project:  Sleep in Cancer Patients.  Everyone can benefit from their interesting and educational presentations.  The program is brought to the Dan River Region by the Cancer Research and Resource Center of Southern Virginia/Danville in partnership with Danville Parks & Recreation.  Please being your lunch and a friend!  Drinks and dessert are provided.  Boxed lunches can be ordered in advance for $6.50.  Call the Resource Center to make a reservation, 434.421.3060, or email cllitzenberg@vcu.edu.    

Maliyah's Hopes & Dreams Benefit

Diabetes Self Management Workshop

VFW Monthly Steak Dinner

VFW Post 647 Ladies Auxilary hosts a steak dinner every first Friday of the month from 5:30pm - 7:30pm.  Dinner includes steak, baked potato, salad, bread, drink and dessert for $13.  This is available for dine-in or take-out.  VFW Post 647 is on Highway 58 W across from Big Sky rents in Danville.  Funds from these dinners stay local and are used to help the community.

Pet Adoption Fair

Let's Dance!

Mondays are dancing nights at Ballou Recreation Center!  Learn new dances, make new friends, and get some exercise in the process.  Class meets every Monday night, 7 till 8:30pm.  Cost is $4 per class. To register or for more info, call 799.5216.
