ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. – The North Carolina Highway Patrol has charged a mother in the death of her 4-year-old son following a weekend accident in Rockingham County.

The wreck happened about 3 p.m. Saturday on Settle Bridge Road. According to the trooper who investigated, Shannon Hudson, 33, was southbound in her SUV when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree.

Her son, Colton Orr, was on the back seat but was not properly restrained. He died at UNC Rockingham in Eden.

His mother was treated  for non-life threatening injuries and charged with felony death by motor vehicle, impaired driving and driving without a proper child restraint system.
