(Pittsylvania County, Va.) – A Gretna couple died when fire raged through their home Tuesday.

Firefighters from Gretna, Hurt and Chatham responded to a call at 68-hundred block Rockford School Road at 10:25 a.m. and found the home fully involved. The fire was so intense that crews were unable to enter the house initially.

Gretna Rescue units were called to the scene and firefighters recovered two bodies from the home.

Family members say Florine and Junior Witcher lived at the address and that both died in the fire. Their bodies have been sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Roanoke.

Eight crews worked to bring the flames under control. It’s believed the fire started in the kitchen but the cause is still under investigation.
