(Danville, Va.) — The oppressive heat is taking its toll on humans and animals.

Danville Humane Society Director Paulette Dean says her office responded to the first known animal victim of the heat wave Tuesday morning. A dog with a temperature of 107 was brought to the shelter, suffering from an apparent heat stroke. Dean says on the advice of a veterinarian, the dog had to be put down.

She cautions that dogs and cats need to be kept out of direct sunlight – preferably in an air conditioned home – and given plenty of water when the temperature approaches 100 degrees.
