(Danville, Va.) — U.S. Attorney Thomas T. Cullen says Thursday’s round-up of eighteen suspected gang members is just the start of efforts to clean up the streets of Danville. He called this “the beginning of a sustained assault on the cycle of gang-related violence that has plagued this community for far too long.”

The federal racketeering and related charges are filed against suspected members of the MILLAs, a set of the national Bloods street gang, and the Rollin 60’s, a set of the national Crips street gang.

Cullen said the gangs are accused in the Aug. 20, 2016 shootout in the Southwick Apartment complex that resulted in the murder of 33-year-old Christopher Motley, who was an innocent bystander.

Danville Police Chief Scott Booth called the 18-month investigation a “true partnership” involving local, state and federal investigators.

If convicted, the defendants face multiple life sentences.
