(Chester, Va.) (AP) — Police in Virginia say two teenagers fatally struck by an Amtrak train were apparently caught off guard while standing on a set of tracks and watching another train pass in the opposite direction.

Lt. John Miller of the Chesterfield Police Department said Thursday that conclusion was reached based on interviews with staff from both trains and surviving friends who were with the teens but managed to get off the tracks in time.

Thirteen-year-old Presley A. Trent and 18-year-old Samuel W. Rivas were struck around 5 p.m. Wednesday in Chester. Miller says they likely died instantly.

An Amtrak spokeswoman says no injuries were reported to the passengers or crew on the train traveling from Savannah, Georgia, to New York.

Miller says police aren’t sure why the group was in the area.
