(Henry County, Va.) – A 55-year-old Martinsville man was killed in a weekend crash in Henry County.

Virginia State Police say 55-year-old Brian Lane Bates was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene of the single vehicle accident, which happened just before noon Sunday on Route 57.

State Police say a 1996 Chevrolet S-10 was westbound on Route 57 when the vehicle ran off the left side of the road and struck a detached trailer. According to investigators, the trailer was parked illegally on the shoulder of the road.

Bates was driving the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The accident is still under investigation.
