(Pittsylvania County, Va.) — A Pittsylvania County family says their 7-year-old son,     Kevin Baynes Jr., died over the weekend after experiencing flu-like symptoms.

The Pittsylvania County 911 Center received a telephone call from the 300 block of Lonesome Pond Road in the Hurt community just after 8 a.m. Sunday. The child’s mother, Samantha Baynes, advised that her son was unconscious, wasn’t breathing and was in cardiac distress.

Rescue personnel and sheriff’s deputies arrived shortly after receiving the emergency call and Kevin was transported to Centra Gretna Medical Facility, where he was pronounced dead.

Kevin was sent home from Mount Airy Elementary School on Friday after vomiting and falling asleep in class. The boy was taken to the emergency room Saturday, where he was diagnosed with strep throat and the flu and sent home with medication. He was found unresponsive the following morning.

The body has been transported to Virginia’s Department of Health’s Medical Examiner’s Office. The results of the Medical Examiner’s report are pending.

Kevin Baynes Jr., was a first-grader at Mount Airy Elementary School.
