(Halifax County, Va.) – It’s been a week since a hunting party discovered human remains in the northern end of Halifax County, and relatives believe the skeletal remains are those of a Cody woman who went missing more than five months ago.

The remains were sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Richmond for positive identification and authorizes are awaiting those results. At the time of the discovery, Halifax County Sheriff Fred Clark said foul play was suspected, but he declined to say whether the remains were those of Emma Lane.
Relatives were notified immediately, since the discovery was made less than a mile from property owned by Layne.

Layne was reported missing in June, and several searches of a pond and wooded areas near her home turned up nothing.

Layne was last seen the night of June 17 at the store she operated in the Cody community of Halifax County. The community held a vigil shortly after her disappearance.
